Business Programme

Combo Mid-Year Programme programme | 3 USA Credits / 6 ECTS Credits


This programme aims to equip international delegates with the knowledge, skills and competencies to understand and respond to the unique business management challenges faced within the South African context. Delegates will return to their home countries with a broader understanding of their ability to apply skills learnt within the South African context both within and beyond the workplace.

The programme focuses on introducing delegates to the multifaceted nature of the South African business environment as well as the many associated socio-economic considerations which impact thereon. Classroom lectures are supplemented with on-site lectures, assignments and presentations. Training will take place in the mornings with the afternoons are set aside for field trips, cultural engagements and other beyond-the-classroom initiatives planned in support of the classroom learnings and/or as part of the unique South African experience.

On Rocks

The four week programme will commence with a three day standard orientation focused around “South African Culture and Language”. The programme content thereafter will have three distinct focus areas:

  • Managing Business in Africa
  • Tensions between Business and Labour
  • The Sustainability Imperative (Social and Environmental)

Managing Business in Africa

  • Challenges and prospects for economics and business development in Africa
  • The trading and investment environment in Africa
  • The legal environment of doing business in Africa
  • Ethical considerations
  • Leadership in Africa
  • Entrepreneurship in Africa
  • Strategy and strategic management in Africa
  • The financial sector and business environment in Africa
  • Managing change during times of political transition

As part of the programme delegates will be introduced to the diversity of businesses in the Eastern Cape, including those within the wool, mohair and citrus industries. Another important consideration within South Africa is the dichotomy of the formal and informal business sectors as well as the presence of many multinationals and transnationals conducting business within the region. It is also important to explore the corporate social responsibility imperative and the role of community outreach in this regard.

This programme is open to students with a GPA of 2.5 (and above) who are in good standing at their home university.

Prior to the programme students are expected to familiarise themselves with important recommended documents which will be provided prior to arrival.

  • 1 x test of 2 hour duration
  • 1 x community based assignment
  • 1 x 3 hour assessment examination

Transcripts will be issued by Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University for the appropriate academic credit.

Programme Cost: $3500.00

The cost of the programme includes tuition, housing, programme-sponsored excursions, selected meals and programme related transportation in South Africa.

Cost does not include application fees, some meals, airfare, personal spending money, international health insurance, or passport fees.
