Single Mid-Year Programme | 3 USA Credits / 6 ECTS Credits


While giving of your time and skills, you also gain an understanding of the development challenges facing South Africa.

On Rocks

The aim of the programme is to provide students from abroad with the opportunity to demonstrate and develop their global citizenship through volunteer work. They will develop an understanding of the current issues impacting community life in South Africa and experience this first-hand through service in a South African community, while earning academic credit. You will be volunteering and spending time at projects with previously disadvantaged children.

This programme orientates students to the fundamentals of community development in the field of Behaviourial Science, in terms of its goals, principles, process, and application in South Africa. The programme is comprised of a theory and practical component. Ongoing informal mentoring is made available to students.

Lectures are taught by NMMU academics and are scheduled daily from Monday - Thursday.
Friday’s are reserved for self-study or programme related activities.

This programme is open to students with a GPA of 2.5 (and above) who are in good standing at their home university.

On completion of this programme students will have:
  • A theoretical understanding of, as well as practical exposure to, the face and impact of poverty in South Africa.
  • A broad understanding of the process and principles of community development.
  • The ability to apply the principles of community development while volunteering at community-based projects.
  • Knowledge of and experience in building relationships to participate in the development of people.
  • Reflected on their theoretical and practical experiences in order to ensure that students learn while providing service.
  • Visual presentation (30% of overall mark)
  • A capstone portfolio will be required to be handed in on the last day of the programme including a daily journal / learning diary which reflects on the volunteering experience. (60% of overall mark)
  • Attendance (10% of overall mark)

Transcripts will be issued by Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University for the appropriate academic credit.

Programme Cost: $3500.00

The cost of the programme includes tuition, housing, programme-sponsored excursions, selected meals and programme related transportation in South Africa.

Cost does not include application fees, some meals, airfare, personal spending money, international health insurance, or passport fees.

Ms Natalie Mansvelt

Ms Natalie Mansvelt is a lecturer in the Department of Social Development Professions.

She has a Masters in Welfare Programme Management from the University of Stellenbosch. Her teaching and research areas of interest are child justice and community development. She has been involved in the facilitation of community service learning workshops in partnership with NMMU’s Office for International Education for the past eight years.
